FIRE-RATED
GLAZED
SYSTEMS

Fire-rated glass partitions, screens, transoms and partitions with integrated doors that separate fire compartments without depriving spaces of light and views. Used in lobbies, corridors, atriums, offices and on escape routes of hotels, hospitals, schools and public buildings. DPS designs the system for the specific opening, selects the frame and fire-resistant glass, manufactures at partner production sites, installs and hands over with as-built documentation.

01 · CONSTRUCTION

WHAT THE SYSTEM
IS MADE OF

FRAME
Steel or aluminium profiles with fire-protective inserts in the chambers. Profile depth and type are chosen for the required fire rating and the height of the construction.
FIRE-RESISTANT GLASS
Laminated glass with clear fire-protective interlayers, or toughened fire-resistant glass. It is the glass together with the frame that determines whether the construction is E, EW or EI.
GLAZING BEADS AND RETAINERS
Steel glass retainers and beads hold the infill in place under heat after the seals have burnt out. They allow the glass to be replaced without dismantling the frame.
INTUMESCENT STRIPS
Fitted in the rebates and around the glazing. In a fire they expand and close the gaps between the glass, profile and opening.
JUNCTIONS
Fixing details to slabs, walls and columns with a non-combustible joint fill. They follow tested details; otherwise the fire rating of the construction cannot be confirmed.
DOOR SET
Integrated fire-rated doors in the same profile with a closer, seals and escape route hardware.

03 · FINISHES AND MATERIALS

FRAME
AND FINISHES

Steel frame with a glazed door

STEEL FRAME

Narrow profiles and high rigidity. The main solution for EI 60 and EI 90 and for large heights.

Aluminium framing in an office

ALUMINIUM FRAME

Lightweight profiles with fire-protective inserts, compatible with façade and office systems. Most often used for EI 30 — EI 60.

Painted framing in a corridor

POWDER COATING

Any RAL colour, matt and textured finishes. The two sides of the partition can be painted in different colours.

Glazed partition

STAINLESS STEEL

Brushed or polished profile cladding for entrance halls and high-traffic areas.

Solid infill panels in a partition

SOLID INSERTS

Opaque fire-resistant panels in partition modules — for areas where views need to be blocked or building services concealed.

Decorative glass

GLASS DECORATION

Frosting, films and safety manifestation, where permitted by the glass certificate.

04 · FIRE GLASS

FIRE-RESISTANT
GLASS

  • Class E — the glass keeps its integrity and blocks flames and hot gases but does not limit heat transfer. Usually toughened fire-resistant glass; used where E is sufficient under the regulations, for example in fire-rated windows.
  • Class EW — adds a limit on radiant heat to integrity: the heat flux density behind the glass does not exceed 3.5 kW/m². People can pass close to the construction during evacuation.
  • Class EI — the glass keeps its integrity and insulation: the unexposed side heats up by no more than 140 °C on average. Achieved with laminated glass with clear fire-protective interlayers.
  • Intumescent interlayers — under heat the interlayers foam into an opaque insulating layer. The number of glass panes and interlayers determines the fire rating and the thickness of the unit.
  • Gel infills — a clear gel between glass panes absorbs heat as its water evaporates. Suitable for high EI ratings at moderate thickness; requires the operating temperature range to be observed.
  • Fire-rated insulated glass units — fire-resistant glass within an IGU for external constructions and spaces with a temperature difference. They also provide thermal insulation, sound insulation and impact safety.

05 · PERFORMANCE

TECHNICAL
PERFORMANCE

E 30 — EI 90

FIRE RESISTANCE

Classes E 30, EI 30, EI 60, EI 90 and EIW 60/90 depending on the frame, glass and junction details.

UP TO 4 M AND MORE

PARTITION HEIGHT

Typical systems are designed for heights up to 4 m; greater heights follow tested solutions of the system manufacturer.

PER SYSTEM

GLASS SIZE

The maximum size of a single pane is defined by the test report and the glass type; confirmed at the design stage.

UP TO 2.5–3 M

DOOR HEIGHT

The height of the integrated door depends on the system, fire rating and chosen lock.

EIWS / EIS

SMOKE TIGHTNESS

Doors within partitions can be smoke-tight where supported by test evidence.

RAL

FRAME FINISH

RAL powder coating, stainless steel, different colours on each side.

Actual fire ratings and sizes of constructions are confirmed by the certificates and test reports of the chosen system for each project.

06 · HARDWARE

DOOR SET
HARDWARE

  • Hinges — surface-mounted or concealed, tested as part of the fire-rated door; number according to leaf weight.
  • Door closers — surface-mounted or concealed in the profile, with adjustable closing force and speed.
  • Closing sequence selector — ensures the correct closing order of the leaves of double doors.
  • Locks and panic hardware — fire-rated locks, panic bars and push-pad devices for escape routes.
  • Electromagnetic hold-opens — hold the door open in normal operation and release it on a fire alarm signal.
  • Access control — electromechanical locks and position sensors integrated with access control and building management systems.

09 · FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

What is the difference between E, EW and EI classes for glazing?

E means integrity only, EW adds a limit on radiant heat, and EI limits heating of the unexposed side. The required class is set by the fire barrier type under Federal Law No. 123-FZ and the fire safety design.

Can fire-resistant glass be fitted in a standard aluminium profile?

No. The fire rating is confirmed only for the construction as a whole: frame, glass, retainers, seals and fixings must match the tested specimen.

What class is required for a door with more than 25 % glazing?

For such doors the regulations also take the W failure criterion into account, so EIW of the relevant type is usually required, and EIWS where smoke-tightness is needed. The final class is set by the design.

How tall can a partition be?

Typical systems are tested to a height of about 4 m, some steel systems to more. Maximum module and glass sizes are taken from the test report of the chosen system and confirmed at the design stage.

Can broken fire-resistant glass be replaced?

Yes, provided the glass is of the same type and class as stated in the construction certificate. DPS selects the glass by its marking and data sheet and replaces it without dismantling the frame.

Can these constructions be used on the outside of a building?

Yes, for external use fire-rated insulated glass units and thermally broken systems are used. Gel glass is used externally only within a glass unit protected against overheating and freezing.
