Rigging calculations

A fire-rated door weighs up to 250 kg, a gate leaf up to a tonne, and a partition glazing unit more than a tonne. We calculate and agree the route of every unit from the truck bed to the opening before dispatch. When the load arrives on site, it is already known what will lift it, which way it goes and how it is set — without damage to the façade, finishes or the products themselves.

Route of a unit on site: unloading, lifting to the floor, movement along the floor and delivery to the opening. Every project has its own scheme — based on the site logistics plan, surveys and actual handling routes.

SUPERCARGO ON STAFF

One specialist is responsible for the load — from calculation to opening

DPS employs a dedicated supercargo. He calculates weights and centres of gravity, selects equipment and lifting accessories, prepares slinging diagrams and personally directs the lifting of heavy and oversized units to height. Calculation, loading at the factory, delivery and lifting are handled by one person — information is not lost between subcontractors and responsibility is never blurred.

How we lift and install

Slinging a door set via a spreader beam with textile slingscrane hook / hoistspreader beamtextile slingsedge protectorscentre of gravitypackagingSlings are vertical — the load does not crush the leaf or the frame

Door sets and gates

Spreader beam and textile slings with edge protectors. The slings run vertically and do not crush the leaf, frame or packaging. We never use chains on finished surfaces.

Lifting glass with a vacuum lifter on a mini crane, tilting through 90 degrees90° turning1231vacuum frame2suction cups3safety slingoutriggersThe mini crane fits through a doorway and runs on mains power inside the building

Glass and glazed leaves

A vacuum lifter on a mini crane or loader crane. The lifter tilts the glass through 90° and holds it on suction pads with a vacuum reserve and a safety sling. It leaves no marks on the surface.

Heavy glazing unit: two vacuum lifters on a spreader beamglass unit up to 1,200 kgload shared between liftersspreader beamWeight above the lifter's rating — two lifters on a spreader beam

Heavy glazing units

If the weight exceeds the rated capacity of one lifter, we fit two or more lifters to a spreader beam. The load is distributed and the glass does not deflect.

Along the floor and into the opening

Glass travels on A-frames and rigging trolleys, doors on roller skates. Large panes are placed into the opening by a glazing robot; small ones are set by hand with vacuum handles.

Equipment

  • Tracked mini cranes

They fit through a door opening, run on mains power inside the building and stand on outriggers on the floor slab.

  • Loader cranes and mobile cranes

Unloading from the truck and lifting to upper floors via window openings and loading platforms.

  • Vacuum lifters

For glass and panels, with rotation and tilting, alarms and vacuum reserve.

  • Glazing robots

Precise positioning and installation of glass in the opening without manual carrying.

  • Spreader beams and slings

Textile slings, spreader beams, protectors — tagged and marked with inspection records.

  • Rigging trolleys

Roller skates, A-frames, tracked stair climbers.

  • Winches and hoists

Lifting through shafts, slab openings and wherever there is no room for a crane.

  • Finish protection

Floor coverings, corner profiles on reveals, soft padding.

We prepare the load at the factory

01

Marking

The packaging shows the weight, centre of gravity, lifting points, floor and opening reference from the specification.

02

Packaging designed for the lifting method

Tilting frames, A-frames for glass, edge corners. The packaging is designed for a specific lifter.

03

Loading sequence

The truck is loaded in reverse installation order: what is installed first comes off first.

Packing and container shipment

For remote projects and from overseas production sites, units travel in sea and rail containers. We pack the load to withstand transhipment, rolling and temperature swings and to arrive without a single scratch.

Container loading: crating, bracing, desiccants123451desiccants2crating and pallets3spacer battens4wedges5tie-down straps
Container loading plan: crates on pallets, spacer beams and wedges, lashing straps, hanging desiccants. A stowage plan is prepared for every shipment.
  • Pallets and crating

Doors and frames are stacked on pallets and enclosed in timber crating sized to the weight and dimensions of the consignment.

  • Surface protection

Film, edge corners, spacers between leaves — finishes do not rub under vibration.

  • Bracing

Spacer beams, wedges and straps: the load does not shift during rolling or container transhipment.

  • Desiccants

Hung according to container volume — protection against condensation when crossing climate zones.

  • Container inspection

Before loading — a weathertightness check: no leaks or holes, doors and seals in good order, floor dry.

  • Seal and documents

Photographic record of loading, stowage plan, packing list with opening references, seal on the doors.

Standard slinging diagrams

Angle between sling legs: no more than 90 degrees70°permitted130°prohibitedAt a wide angle the leg force grows — we use a spreader beam
  • Angle between sling legs — no more than 90°; for larger angles we use a spreader beam
  • Slings and lifters are selected for the load weight with a safety margin
  • Protectors on sharp edges; slings do not touch glass or finishes
  • All lifting accessories are tagged, stamped and recorded in the inspection log
  • Before lifting — a trial lift of 200–300 mm and a slinging check

Site safety

Caution: glass
Only with lighting
  • The danger zone under the load is fenced off and kept clear
  • One banksman giving signals, with radio contact to the crane operator
  • Before lifting glass — check of the lifter vacuum and alarm
  • Work stops if wind exceeds the equipment's rated limit
  • Rigging only in daylight or with the work area lit to standard; no lifting in fog, snowfall or at dusk
  • Hard hats, safety footwear, gloves and hi-vis vests for everyone on site

Hand signals

Slinger hand signals: hoist, lower, stop, cautionHoist loadLower loadStopCautionSignals are given by one appointed signaller; anyone can signal “Stop”
The slinger and crane operator work to a single system of signals. Signals are rehearsed at the briefing before work starts.

Handling glass and timber

Glass

High cut-resistance gloves with a non-slip coating, arm guards, safety glasses, footwear with protective toecaps. Glass edges stay covered with profiles until installation, and lifters are vacuum-checked before every lift.

Timber doors

Transported and stored in a dry, warm room without sharp temperature changes. Leaves acclimatise to the building before installation and are lifted only into a closed building envelope — no rain, snow or frost. Veneer and lacquer are protected by film and corners until handover.

Permits to work and documents

A permit to work is written authorisation for hazardous work. It states the crew, responsible persons, safety measures and timeframes. We issue it before work starts and close it afterwards, and the crew receives a task-specific briefing, signed off.

  • Crane work execution plan

Work execution plan: equipment positions, danger zones, slinging and storage diagrams.

  • Method statement

Sequence of loading, unloading and rigging operations for each product type.

  • Permit to work

Work at height, in the confined conditions of an occupied building, and work concurrent with other contractors.

  • Briefings

Site induction, workplace briefing and task briefing before lifting — recorded in the logs.

  • Lifting accessories inspection log

Slings, spreader beams and lifters are inspected before work; defective items are withdrawn.

  • Site access

General contractor's access certificate, workforce lists, slinger certificates and work-at-height permits.

Team and certifications

01

Installers are certified slingers

All DPS staff installers are certified as slingers. One crew handles the load from unloading to the opening.

02

Health and safety training and assessment, work-at-height permits, a person responsible for safe operation of lifting equipment.

03

Documents

Work execution plans and method statements, slinging diagrams, permits to work, lifting accessory inspection logs.
